The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
