TikTok Influencers Fueling Unofficial Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Medication

An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on communication apps, based on recent findings.

Experimental Drug Gaining Popularity Online

The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Followers are encouraged to contact these accounts directly for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.

Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms

Additionally, a flourishing trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” images, administration instructions and assertions of next-day British shipping. Sellers market the drug there before directing customers to other platforms for transactions.

Learning About Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could assist patients reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Express Concerns

However, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the UK is worrisome and could result in users injecting products of unknown origin.

Several experts said the demand for retatrutide could be connected to the rising cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several content creators try to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, risking penalties, prosecution or prison.

Service Reaction and Content Removal

Based on TikTok, the platform has removed violative content and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The organization stated it was committed to keeping the service safe and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Activities

Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 members marketing retatrutide using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of members, populated with photos of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at home.

Within minutes of entering one group, a vendor shared contact information, where most transactions occur. The vendor provided an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Item Information and Costs

Inside these communities, messages show dark colored parcels with postal service stickers, stating to contain new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between powder vials, prepared at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens typically priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should last, sellers give contradictory responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Measures

A representative for Telegram stated it regularly moderated dangerous content on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Cautions

“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of an online medical service linked the increase in interest to recent price rises for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are using online platforms. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has already seen patients harmed by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Producer Position

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may expose patients to potentially serious medical dangers”.
